On one occasion at school, Churchill at the age of 13, was asked by his Latin teacher to decline "mensa" (table). The boy proceeded to do so,giving the nominative, accusative, genitive, dative and ablative.
-"The vocative?"prompted his teacher.
- "But I don't intend ever to talk to tables," Churchill replied reasonably, if impertinently.
